Before you decide

What people wish they knew

  • You will need a car for everything. There is no meaningful walk score here.

  • The lack of a train is the tradeoff for the space and quiet. Know that going in.

  • River Vale has very little commercial development by design. People who love it tend to love it for exactly this reason.

  • Property taxes in River Vale are notable even by Bergen County standards. Factor this into your budget alongside the purchase price.

  • The school situation is slightly split: River Vale elementary schools feed into Westwood Regional for upper grades. Most families find this works well in practice.

We absolutely love it. It's a great family town with a great school system. The academics are wonderful with plenty AP classes once in high school.
